Sand Mountain Trip Report
Spring Break 2005

We arrived Thursday right before dark. The place was pretty deserted.
That's our
small camp (three rigs) in the middle of the picture to the right of the first
bathroom.

Krazy Keven was already there and set up by Friday.

The only casualty for the weekend was Mike's Toyota. A nail in a tire
meant a
trip to Fallon for a flat repair.

Mike tried to get his Toyota up to Superbowl. He was short by a few
horsepower.

Dave's "new" Odyssey couldn't make it up to Superbowl either.

Mac like's to travel light. His bed for the night was right in the sand.

We awoke Saturday to the sound of gusting wind and rain. After
listening to the
weather reports, we decided to head out and see if we could beat chain control
of the summit. We made it up and over Spooner Pass, but they put up chain
controls about 45 minutes before we made it to Meyers. After a bit of
thought,
we decided to fork over the $150 for chains (rear axle on the 4x4 truck,
and
one axle on the Weekend Warrior).
The rest of our party were in motorhomes and decided to wait it out and see if
chain control lifted. They ended up
spending the night in South Lake Tahoe. The
next morning they decided to buy chains and give it a try. By the time
they reached
Meyers, CalTrans lifted chain control.....
